We thought we could make do with the kitchen as it is for at least a little while. There were no appliances in the kitchen when we viewed the house, so we didn't know how things would fit. When we went to buy appliances we got the smallest of the standard refrigerators and it is just too big for the kitchen. There are three doors in the kitchen, two of which provide a nice circular flow for the first floor, the third is a door to the back yard. The fridge pretty much makes one of the doors unusable. Once the stove is in we may not be able to get in the room at all.
After much discussion with a contractor that we know we decided to take out the exterior door in the kitchen and put in french doors in the dining room where the two windows are on the left. This will allow us to have a u shaped kitchen rather than two strips of cabinets on either side of the door. The work started last night with the deck being modified to stretch far enough for the new french doors. Not the greatest photography, sorry. I made a mad dash outside after they stopped working to get a few photos since I had neglected to get them before hand.

French doors will be lovely, and great for Greta to make little fingerprints all over.
