24 hours of firsts

It all started last night with Gretchen rolling over back to front and front to back.  She held out for a while with rolling over due to her dislike of activities that don't involve being held, but it was worth the wait as she gave us the pleasure of both rolls at once.

This morning Gretchen clearly had a cold.  She seemed a little congested yesterday, but today she was not herself.  She went to the babysitter's (who also had a cold, but insisted it was okay for her to come), but only made it through the morning, and then we had our first official sick day.  It was strange to go home from work for the first time not because I was sick, but to care for another sicky.  Gretchen had been fasting and inconsolable at the sitter's, but was soon back to her usual hungry, feisty self when we got home.  Hopefully she won't suffer long with this, the first of many colds to come.  She tried to look as unsick as possible for her photo.

And finally...the first crocus.  What a lovely sight it is.  Hope for the end of winter.  Hope for a lovely spring.  You can see by the grass and moss in my flower bed that I haven't been keeping my garden very well, but the crocus has managed to push through the debris to warm our hearts.

Uh-oh. I think Evie and I are getting sick today... I hope we didn't give it to Gretchen! We read "Each Peach Pear Plum" the last two nights and Evie insists that Baby Bunting is actually Baby Gretchen. I agree there is a resemblence. And I think moss is completely appropriate in any Northwest garden.

Oh how we long for crocuses here in Iowa. Or even the grass that clearly lies between the "snow upon snow upon snow" as Leo Kottke sang last night (the song is "In the Deep Midwinter). Congratulations to our strong little Gretchen, and how wonderful that Dad and Mom both saw her first gymnatstics!
