Good old Bob

I've been wanting to go out for pancakes, and Don needed to pick up some dry goods for Toast, so this morning we popped over to Bob's Red Mill for breakfast and shopping. We could get pancakes at Toast, but it's nice to get out elsewhere now and then--especially the rare times that we are able to get out as a family.

It's no Amana's breakfast, but the pancakes and eggs were done right, and that's all that matters. I don't recommend eating the grits that come as a sample side, and I can never accept turkey bacon as a substitute for the real thing, but all in all it was a good outing.

Now I need a little advice from you lovely readers. I'm trying to get the little girl to take a bottle in preparation for the day I go back to work. She either cries or has a bewildered look on her face when given a bottle, and doesn't seem to know to suck on the bottle. We have some time to work this out, but if any of you encountered something similar and have any words of wisdom it would be much appreciated.

I'm starving and that breakfast looks SO GOOD! Sorry I can't help with your other issue!
I'm also starving, and also thinking that breakfast looks SO GOOD! And that I'd like to open a pancake place in Strasbourg - or have someone else do so (hint! hint!). We ain't got nothin' like that...

As for the other issue... Our boys were born at the moment at which the suckling instinct starts kicking in. So they never really got the hang of breast feeding before they got the hang of bottle feeding. But even the latter took a bit of time. We just kept having to put the bottle to their mouths and say encouraging things. Some bottle tips are better than others, though, so you might want to try another kind. Check out what the consumers (or rather, their parents) have to say online before buying. (& sorry I couldn't offer the magic formula, but quite honestly, I'm not sure there is one. babies are smart, though, and they figure it out - especially when they have to!) Good luck!

I forget what you said about whether she'll take a pacifier. If she does, then I would recommend finding a nipple that is similar in shape to that of her pacifier. There's also tips about making sure you're in the same position and doing the same routine stuff that you would do when nursing, so that she knows what is supposed to happen.
Hope that helps!

The key is to be found in the end of Jenny's comment. Hungry babies eat, and at the end of the day, one nipple is as good as the next, so long as there's food coming out of it. Ava would *never* take a bottle from Leah; the only people who ever had any luck were those who weren't capable of breastfeeding. It's pretty amazing what babies figure out.
